Ingredients for Caramel Apple Crisp

This treat is a breeze to throw together and only calls for ingredients you probably already have stocked in your pantry. Here’s everything you need:

Oatmeal crust + topping

– Brown Sugar Maple Instant Oatmeal

– Almond Flour

– Unsalted Butter

– Brown Sugar

– Cinnamon 

– Egg yolk

Apple filling:

– Apples

– Brown Sugar

– Cornstarch

– Lemon juice

What’s the difference between a crisp and a crumble?

Crisps and crumbles are both popular desserts that feature baked fruit and a streusel-like topping. The main difference between the two is the type of topping used.

A crisp typically has a topping made of oats, flour, butter, and sugar. The topping is crisp and crunchy, hence the name. A crumble, on the other hand, has a topping made of flour, butter, and sugar, and it doesn’t usually contain oats. The texture is crumbly, hence the name.

Both desserts can be made with a variety of fruits, such as apples, berries, or peaches. They are often served warm and topped with ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

1/2 cup or 1 pack instant oatmeal, brown sugar maple
cup almond flour
cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature
1 tablespoon brown sugar
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon Egg yolk
pinch salt
apple filling & toppings
2 cups apples, diced & peeled
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon lemon juice
pinch salt
caramel sauce
vanilla ice cream

Directions

Prepare the crust

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. To make the crust + topping, in a bowl mix the oatmeal, almond flour, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and egg yolk (this can be combined with hands). Once combined the mixture should be similar to the texture of a crumble. Using half of the crumbled mixture, press down and cover the bottom of a small cast-iron skillet or oven-safe dish. Set aside.

Prepare the filling

For the apple filling, in a bowl first, mix the brown sugar and cornstarch until combined. Next add in the diced apples, lemon juice, and salt and mix together until the apples are nicely coated.

Bake the crumble & serve

Top the crumbled crust with the apple filling mixture. With the remaining half of the crumbled mixture, sprinkle, crumble, and top the apple filling. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 350ºF or until the top is golden brown and crisp. After baking, top with a caramel sauce drizzle, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a final caramel sauce drizzle to top it all off!
